Sudan on Tuesday held the first preparatory workshop aimed at strengthening the role of the National Reporting Mechanism in drafting the country's Fourth National Report under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process.

The workshop, hosted at the UN Development Programme (UNDP) office in Khartoum, brought together representatives of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Sudan, members of the national committee established by the Minister of Justice, and human rights experts.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Justice, National Human Rights Mechanism Rapporteur Yasser Sayed Ahmed described the workshop as the official launch of preparations for Sudan's fourth national report, which will be submitted to the UN Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review mechanism.

He said the UPR is a peer-review process designed to improve human rights conditions, uphold human dignity, and support states in fulfilling their international obligations. He stressed that Sudan's commitment to promoting and protecting human rights stems from a genuine national will, adding that preparing the report is a comprehensive and participatory national process.

Sayed Ahmed also praised the strategic partnership between the National Human Rights Mechanism and the OHCHR country office, noting that the workshop aims to deepen understanding of the UPR process, exchange views, and develop a clear roadmap for the committee's work, including broader consultations with states and key stakeholders.

For his part, the OHCHR representative commended the efforts of the National Human Rights Mechanism and reaffirmed the office's support for preparing the report. He noted that the UPR process is based on three reports and described the event as the first workshop on the UPR to be held since the outbreak of the war.
