Sudan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, called on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to support Sudan's recovery and help rebuild its intellectual property (IP) system while addressing the opening session of the 68th Assemblies of WIPO Member States on Wednesday.
The envoy reaffirmed Sudan's commitment to strengthening intellectual property protection as a key driver of economic growth, innovation, entrepreneurship, and the preservation of national assets with cultural and economic value.
Hamid highlighted Sudan's efforts to build national capacity in intellectual property through projects implemented in partnership with WIPO, including the development of a national IP strategy, the registration of geographical indications for Sudanese products, and the establishment of a national training center along with technology and innovation hubs.
He said these initiatives had been disrupted by the proxy war waged by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, which he said continues to receive military and political backing from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He added that the militia's systematic attacks on infrastructure had inflicted severe damage on Sudan's innovation ecosystem, affecting entrepreneurs, research institutions, and the creative sector.
Concluding his address, Ambassador Hamid expressed Sudan's hope that WIPO would play a leading role in supporting the country's recovery and reconstruction, rebuilding its intellectual property system, and advancing innovation and sustainable development.
