President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, met on Wednesday in Khartoum with the African Union (AU) Envoy to Sudan, Ambassador Mohamed Belaiche, in the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi-Eddin Salem.
Following the meeting, Ambassador Belaiche said the visit forms part of the African Union Commission's ongoing consultations with the Sudanese leadership on the latest political and security developments, as well as preparations to reopen the AU Liaison Office in Khartoum in the near future.
Belaiche said he conveyed to President Al-Burhan the greetings and appreciation of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
The discussions also focused on prospects for peace in Sudan and the challenges hindering progress. Both sides stressed the need to intensify efforts to overcome those obstacles and advance security and stability.
The AU envoy reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to supporting de-escalation as a crucial step toward a ceasefire, describing it as the gateway to resolving the crisis. He also emphasized the importance of an inclusive political process that engages all stakeholders and enables them to play a meaningful role in shaping its course and outcomes.
Belaiche reiterated the African Union's support for a political solution and a comprehensive national dialogue, stressing that lasting state-building must be founded on national reconciliation, mutual acceptance, and peaceful coexistence.
“The Commission remains committed to supporting Sudan's unity and sovereignty while accompanying the country on its path toward security, stability, peace, and development,” he said.
He also announced that a high-level African Union delegation is expected to visit Khartoum in the coming period.
