New York, (Nabaa Sudan) – Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohi-Eddin Salem on Monday called for pressure to be exerted on neighboring countries that he said are providing support to militias, considering that halting such support is an essential part of efforts to end the war in Sudan.
In Sudan’s address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Salem said that his country remains committed to achieving lasting peace, ending foreign interference and support for militias, as well as stopping attacks on hospitals, educational centers, and official state institutions.
He noted that Sudan had lived under sanctions for more than two decades, saying that the sanctions had affected the country’s sovereignty, the stability of Sudanese people, and their daily lives.
On international affairs, the Sudanese Foreign Minister called for increasing African representation on the UN Security Council to two seats, as part of what he described as the need to strengthen the continent’s presence in international decision-making institutions.
Salem renewed Sudan’s support for the Palestinian people, affirming that the Palestinian cause “remains the basis for achieving peace in the region,” and supporting the Palestinians’ right to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
The minister headed Sudan’s delegation to the meetings of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly after President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan was unable to participate due to not obtaining an entry visa to the United States.
