Khartoum, (Nabaa Sudan) — Chief of Staff of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) General Yasser Al-Atta said Ethiopia is exploiting the circumstances of the war in Sudan to pursue its interests in border areas, pointing to efforts to benefit from agricultural lands in Al-Fashaga, Jabal Halawa, Geisan, Al-Kormuk and Al-Damazin.
In an interview with Egypt’s Al-Shorouq newspaper, Al-Atta said this exploitation could continue for one or two years, with what he described as an apparent desire to prolong the period. He attributed this to an internal conflict in Ethiopia and the position of the Amhara ethnic group toward Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
He said, in his assessment, Ethiopia’s moves go beyond exploiting agricultural land to an attempt to gain access to the Red Sea by taking control of Al-Fashaga and Al-Damazin and subsequently moving toward Eritrea’s Assab Port, with support from allied regional countries in exchange for recognizing the disputed areas as Ethiopian territory. He stressed that “this plan will not succeed.”
Al-Atta said the army has intelligence information and satellite imagery that, according to him, prove that Assosa Airport and other airports have been used to launch drones toward Sudan.
He added that examining the wreckage of several drones shot down by the army, as well as devices found inside them, helped determine their launch sites. He said Khartoum contacted the countries that manufacture the aircraft and received responses that, according to him, confirmed their connection to purchases made by the armed forces of regional countries allied with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Ethiopia.
