Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit welcomed the address by the Prime Minister of Sudan’s Transitional Government to the UN Security Council, hailing the comprehensive peace initiative it presented as a clear commitment to ending the war, easing humanitarian suffering, and safeguarding Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
In a statement, Arab League Secretary-General’s adviser and spokesperson Jamal Rushdi said the Arab League values the initiative’s political, humanitarian, and security messages, viewing it as a serious, constructive framework that merits positive engagement as a cornerstone of any comprehensive path to restoring security and stability and protecting national unity.
Rushdi said the League backs the initiative’s calls for a comprehensive ceasefire, civilian protection, unhindered humanitarian access, addressing displacement and refugee crises, disarmament, and implementing disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) programs—steps essential to rebuilding trust, repairing the social fabric, and strengthening a unified Sudanese state.
He also underscored the importance of engaging with proposed confidence-building measures across political, security, economic, and social tracks, grounded in transitional justice, reparations, and national reconciliation, to secure sustainable peace and prevent renewed violence or fragmentation.
The Arab League further welcomed the initiative’s stress on national ownership of the political process and the launch of an inclusive intra-Sudanese dialogue during the transitional period, aimed at reaching consensus on governance and culminating in free and fair elections under international observation.
