The Embassy of the Republic of Sudan in Washington welcomed the action taken by the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee on H.R. 1939, known as the Sudan Peace Act, affirming a shared commitment among Sudan, Congress, and the American people to end the suffering of the Sudanese people and achieve a just and lasting peace.
In a press statement issued on Friday, the embassy expressed appreciation for continued U.S. congressional attention to Sudan’s humanitarian crisis, stressing the importance of ensuring unhindered humanitarian access, protecting civilians, and supporting peace and stability efforts.
The embassy commended Committee Chairman Brian Mast and Ranking Member Gregory Meeks following the removal of language related to steps within the United Nations General Assembly Credentials Committee that would have affected Sudan’s representation in international institutions.
It said the amendment reflects respect for Sudan’s sovereignty and legitimate institutions, describing this as essential for peace and for strengthening cooperation between Khartoum and Washington. The embassy also thanked committee members for addressing concerns related to the provision.
At the same time, the Sudanese government expressed reservations over continued language that draws equivalence between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia. It reaffirmed that the Sudanese Armed Forces are the country’s constitutional national institution responsible for safeguarding the state and its territorial integrity, noting that some committee members had previously described RSF actions as genocide.
The statement reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to accountability, while stressing that such measures must reflect the realities of the conflict and relevant U.S. determinations.
It reiterated commitment to a Sudanese-led transition toward democratic civilian rule, unrestricted humanitarian access, accountability for violations of international humanitarian law, and stronger participation of women and youth in shaping the country’s future.
The embassy said Sudan views the United States as an important partner in peace efforts, adding that recent committee changes demonstrate the value of dialogue and mutual respect.
It concluded that both countries share the goal of ending the war and building a peaceful, democratic future for Sudan.
