Sudan Joins China-Arab Efforts to Combat Desertification, Offers to Host International Research Centre

Sudan participated for the first time in a meeting of the Steering Committee of the China-Arab International Research Centre for Drought, Desertification, and Land Degradation, held in Ulaanbaatar on the sidelines of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP17).

During the meeting, China and the Arab countries launched their joint plan for 2026–2031 to strengthen cooperation in combating drought, desertification, and land degradation through the development of satellite-monitoring technologies, decision-support systems, and the transfer of expertise and technology.

Secretary-General of the Sudanese Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources, Suleiman Al-Bouni Suleiman, stressed the importance of scientific cooperation in addressing the impacts of drought and desertification on food and water security and livelihoods. He also highlighted Sudan’s efforts and expertise in land management and combating desertification.

Sudan announced its readiness to host the headquarters of the China-Arab International Research Centre, proposing the signing of a memorandum of understanding to strengthen scientific research, capacity building, and technology transfer, develop early-warning systems, and implement joint projects to address drought and land degradation.
