The Federal Ministry of Health held a meeting chaired by Undersecretary Dr. Ali Babiker Sidahmed to discuss the impact of unilateral sanctions on Sudan’s health system and mechanisms for measuring their effects. The meeting was attended by experts and health sector leaders, as well as Professor Reza Majdzadeh, Professor of International Health at the University of Essex in the United Kingdom.
The Undersecretary highlighted the impact of sanctions on the health system’s ability to deliver services and directed the formation of a committee to oversee the implementation of the SHAMS mechanism. He also assigned the Director General of the General Directorate of Planning and Policies to coordinate and follow up on its implementation.
Professor Reza Majdzadeh explained that the mechanism enables the impact of sanctions on public health to be measured and practical recommendations to be developed to mitigate their effects by strengthening international partnerships and developing alternative policies. He noted that the World Health Organization’s Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office had adopted the mechanism to measure these impacts.
Participants affirmed that unilateral sanctions negatively affect health services. At the conclusion of the meeting, they stressed the importance of cooperation between national and international institutions to develop recommendations that support the health system and ease the burden on citizens.
