Geneva (Nabaa Sudan) — Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid Hassan, addressed a high-level event on the situation of refugees and voluntary return, held on the sidelines of the 77th session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
He affirmed that the voluntary return movement had exceeded five million people returning from within Sudan and neighbouring countries, calling on the international community to shift from humanitarian response to supporting early recovery, reconstruction, and the rehabilitation of infrastructure and essential service facilities.
Hassan explained that humanitarian assistance alone was insufficient to rebuild water and electricity networks, hospitals, schools and productive sectors. He stressed the importance of strengthening development assistance and essential services to ensure stability for returnees.
The Sudanese Permanent Representative in Geneva also outlined the efforts of the Higher National Mechanism for Voluntary Return and Reintegration, urging international partners and development and financing institutions to step up their support for these efforts.
