The Economic Development Sector of the Council of Ministers recommended, in its meeting held on Wednesday and chaired by Finance Minister Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim, the adoption of the Integrated Livestock and Fisheries Production Cities Project in the Gezira Scheme, as well as a programme to develop livestock markets and Sudanese exports.
The sector stressed the importance of the project as a national initiative representing a strategic shift that contributes to economic development, underlining the need to focus on agricultural investment and attract foreign investment in livestock and fisheries production, while incorporating aquaculture within the livestock production programme.
It also emphasised the importance of strengthening basic infrastructure for the livestock sector, giving priority to transport and logistics for livestock exports. The sector further underscored the need to increase livestock production, enhance value addition, and encourage partnerships with local and international private sector actors in production, modernization and development of quarantine facilities and livestock marketing.
