Finance Minister Concludes OACPS Meetings as Sudan Secures Full US$1 Million Debt Waiver

Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim concluded his participation in the 121st Session of the Ministerial Council of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), where the Council approved a full waiver of Sudan's US$1 million debt to the organization, underscoring member states' support for Sudan amid the exceptional challenges facing its economy.

The meetings, held from July 15–16, brought together ministers and representatives from OACPS member states.

Discussions focused on key strategic issues, including institutional and administrative reforms, as well as policies and programs aimed at advancing economic transformation and strengthening the economic resilience of member states.

Participants also discussed ways to accelerate ratification of the Samoa Partnership Agreement with the European Union, stressing the importance of bringing the agreement into force so member states can benefit from the opportunities it offers.

The Council adopted a ministerial decision granting Sudan a full waiver of its US$1 million debt in light of the exceptional circumstances facing the Sudanese economy since the rebellion of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.

The Minister expressed the Sudanese Government's appreciation to all OACPS member states for their support, reaffirming Sudan's commitment to strengthening the organization and advancing its objectives through collective action to address shared challenges. He said the decision reflects the spirit of solidarity and cooperation among member states.

On the sidelines of the session, the Minister met with the OACPS Secretary-General to discuss expanding cooperation, strengthening technical and institutional support, and exploring employment opportunities for Sudanese nationals within the organization's Secretariat.

The Minister also held bilateral meetings with the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning of The Gambia, the State Minister at Ethiopia's Ministry of Finance, and the State Minister at Somalia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
