The Gezira Scheme Administration announced that 860,000 feddans have been cultivated, representing 75% of the targeted area for the summer agricultural season, with expectations that the area will reach 1.05 million feddans by the end of the season, driven by the return of farmers and the availability of irrigation water.
Governor of the Gezira Scheme Engineer Ibrahim Mustafa Ali denied that the scheme had been affected by a water shortage, explaining that the affected areas account for no more than 3%, after obstacles were addressed by providing 300,000 gallons of diesel fuel and clearing the main canals, in addition to improved rainfall.
The cultivated areas included 450,000 feddans of sorghum, 150,000 feddans of groundnuts, 140,000 feddans of cotton, and 120,000 feddans of lentils, according to the SUNA Forum on production and securing resources for the summer agricultural season.
