Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Dr. Ismat Gurashi Abdullah held official talks with Syrian Minister of Agriculture Engineer Basil Al-Suwaydan in Damascus. The talks took place during an official visit led by the minister at the head of a high-level delegation, following an invitation from the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Drylands (ACSAD).
At the outset of the meeting, the Minister of Agriculture conveyed the congratulations of the government and people of Sudan to the Syrian Arab Republic on the occasion of the country's liberation. He also conveyed the greetings of the Sudanese leadership to his Syrian counterpart, wishing Syria security, stability, and prosperity.
The minister briefed his counterpart on the political and security situation in Sudan and reviewed the ministry's plan to expand wheat production. He explained that the government aims to cultivate one million feddans in the Northern State to achieve self-sufficiency and eventually export surplus production. He emphasized Sudan's need for wheat seeds and expressed his country's desire to strengthen agricultural cooperation with Syria.
For his part, Syrian Minister of Agriculture Engineer Basil Al-Suwaydan welcomed the Sudanese delegation, praising the visit and affirming Syria's readiness to provide the necessary support to Sudan, including wheat seeds, and to enhance agricultural cooperation between the two countries.
He also affirmed Syria's commitment to reviewing the agreement previously signed between the two ministries of agriculture and completing the necessary procedures in preparation for its final signing, emphasizing the depth of the historic and fraternal relations between the Sudanese and Syrian peoples.
As part of the visit, the Sudanese delegation held talks with officials from ACSAD, led by its Director-General Dr. Nasr-Eddin Obaid. The discussions addressed prospects for joint cooperation, particularly in green belt projects and their role in supporting local communities.
The two sides also discussed signing the agreement for the third phase of the green belts project and received maps for optimal land use in Al-Gezira, White Nile, and Blue Nile states.
