Soni, Jebel Marra, (Nabaa Sudan) – The General Coordination for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Refugees in Darfur Region announced that 30 children have died from complications related to malnutrition in the Soni area of East Jebel Marra, amid deteriorating health conditions and a lack of medical services.
The Coordination’s spokesperson, Adam Rijal, told Sudan Tribune that its latest monitoring recorded more than 100 cases of acute malnutrition among children in the area, in addition to 30 deaths resulting from complications of malnutrition and the deteriorating health situation.
He explained that the recorded figures do not reflect the actual scale of the situation due to the difficulty of documenting cases of illness and death amid the absence of health centers and health monitoring and reporting systems, suggesting that there may be other cases that have not been documented or reached.
Rijal noted that the area is facing challenges including drought, declining agricultural production, and food shortages, as well as insufficient humanitarian assistance compared with the scale of needs. He also pointed to rising prices of food and medicines and declining purchasing power among displaced families.
The Coordination called on the international community, donors, and humanitarian organizations to take urgent action, increase funding for the humanitarian response, support health, food, water, and sanitation programs, and ensure that aid reaches those affected, with particular attention to children.
