Families of detained women activists in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, have expressed growing concern after losing all contact with relatives transferred from “Korea” Prison to an undisclosed location.
Intelligence units affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia had previously conducted an arrest campaign targeting prominent female activists following their participation in a women’s rights workshop.
Those detained include broadcaster Ishraga Abdelrahman, Dr. Manahil Mustafa Al-Sanousi (Director of Al-Manhal Training Center), radio presenter Zahra Mohammed Al-Hassan, and activist Mawahib Ibrahim. Unconfirmed reports suggest activist Izdehar Abdel-Monim Hamid may also be in custody.
A relative, Al-Hassan Ibrahim, said families had been able to check on the detainees while they were held at Korea Prison south of Nyala, but were shocked last Thursday to learn they had been moved to an unknown location. RSF members reportedly told families the detainees were “under investigation” for their recent activities in the city.
Another relative said Mawahib Ibrahim was taken from her home in Al-Sadd Al-Aali neighborhood by a plain-clothed force, and contact with her has been lost for three days.
Noon Kashkoush, a member of the Emergency Lawyers group, warned of the serious risks facing the detainees and called for their immediate release and protection. She said Nyala has become increasingly hostile to freedom of expression, citing detention centers holding more than 600 female detainees where serious violations and gender-based violence reportedly occur.
The arrests followed a workshop organized by “Women Journalists for Peace” and “Natakallam,” which focused on women’s rights under international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1325. The workshop concluded with recommendations for women’s economic and political empowerment and the enforcement of laws deterring violence against women—efforts apparently met with security pressure and reprisals.
