Khartoum, (Nabaa Sudan) – The Sudan Doctors Network (SDN) announced the death of humanitarian volunteer Al-Tayeb Al-Toum Mursal inside Shalla Prison in El-Fasher, North Darfur State, after being detained since the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of the city in October 2025.

In a statement on Sunday, the network said Mursal died in detention, noting that he was among more than 3,000 people it said were being held at Shalla Prison and other sites used as detention centers, including houses and buildings at the University of El-Fasher.

It added that the humanitarian and health conditions of the detainees remain unknown, amid a lack of communication between them and their families for nearly a year, according to the statement, which also cited information about other deaths in detention centers.

The network held the RSF responsible for the safety of the detainees, saying that detention centers were experiencing dire humanitarian and health conditions, with diseases and epidemics spreading and basic necessities in short supply. It also said there had been reports of detainees being subjected to neglect, ill-treatment, and torture.

The network called on the international community and human rights and humanitarian organizations to take action to determine the fate of the detainees, allow medical and humanitarian organizations access to detention sites, assess their conditions, and provide healthcare and basic necessities. It also called for the release of civilians it described as being arbitrarily detained and for those responsible for any violations against detainees to be held accountable.
