Groups affiliated with the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) attacked the Tulu Kapi gold mine in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region (West Wellega), near the border with the Benishangul-Gumuz Region in Kamashi District, causing extensive human and material losses.

The attack resulted in the site being completely burned down and a number of vehicles and machinery used in mining operations being destroyed. Dozens of government security personnel assigned to protect the site were killed, along with some workers and administrators and a number of local residents. The attack prompted the project management to shut down the site completely and evacuate its workers pending the provision of adequate federal security.

The Tulu Kapi mine is considered a strategic investment project of British company KEFI and has received strong support from the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, which views the project as important to promoting stability and generating foreign-currency revenues for the state. The mine was officially inaugurated in February 2026, amid government pledges that it would benefit local residents, the region, and the federal government.
