U.S. television network CNN reported that the U.S. military had been preparing a ground operation inside Iran to seize enriched uranium stockpiles before President Donald Trump decided to halt the plan.
According to the report, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine made an urgent visit to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) headquarters upon returning from a NATO meeting to review proposed plans for a ground assault.
CNN said the operation was suspended amid warnings that a forceful Iranian response could prolong the conflict, disrupt the global economy, and result in significant U.S. military casualties.
The network also reported that Iran had sealed some uranium storage facilities, planted mines at the entrances to key sites, and demolished tunnels leading to storage locations in anticipation of a possible U.S. attempt to seize the material.
