Agriculture Minister, Darfur Governor Discuss Agricultural Season and Food Security

Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Professor Ismat Gurashi met with Darfur Region Governor General Minni Arko Minawi to discuss challenges facing the agricultural season, as well as the region’s agricultural and humanitarian conditions and efforts to boost production and achieve food security.

The region’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Al-Sadig Khamis Barnago, said the meeting addressed the impact of the war on the agricultural sector, including preventing farmers from accessing their areas and carrying out their activities, which has affected production and livelihoods and posed a threat to food security.

He said the federal government, in coordination with state institutions, had put in place measures to avert the anticipated food gap, support the agricultural season and provide essential needs, noting the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Council of Ministers’ attention to food security.

Barnago stressed the importance of protecting the agricultural season and enabling farmers to produce, as well as strengthening coordination among the federal government, the regional government and society to address the risks of famine and drought and promote economic and social stability.
