The Embassy of the Republic of the Sudan in Moscow, in cooperation with the Russian State University for the Humanities, organized a cultural event on Thursday marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sudan and Russia.
The event was addressed by the university’s rector, Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia Mohamed Al-Ghazali Siraj, and representatives of the Russian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Higher Education, as well as the Federal Agency for International Cooperation.
In his opening remarks, the Ambassador noted that diplomatic relations were established in the same year Sudan gained independence, underscoring their enduring significance. He reviewed key milestones in bilateral ties, including the 1961 visit of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and subsequent economic cooperation that contributed to Sudan’s development.
He conveyed Sudan’s deep appreciation for Russia’s principled and steadfast support since the outbreak of the war, affirming its consistent backing of Sudan’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and its firm defence of Sudan in international fora.
Russian officials, in turn, commended the strong and enduring partnership, reaffirming their commitment to further advancing cooperation on the basis of mutual respect and shared interests.
The programme featured lectures on Sudanese civilization and the work of Russian archaeological missions, alongside musical performances and a Sudanese cultural showcase. An accompanying exhibition highlighted Sudan’s historical heritage, diplomatic history, and cultural diversity.
The event was attended by Russian officials, academics, students, and members of the Sudanese community, marking the first in a series of commemorative activities in Russia.
