General Al-Burhan: Pivotal April Moments in Sudanese History

In a gathering with officers from the 31st cohort of the Sudanese Armed Forces; discussions highlighted the historic role of Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC) President General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan—also a member of the 31st cohort—throughout Sudan’s modern history.
Personal anecdotes illustrated his character, temperament, and leadership, tracing three critical “April moments” in his career: April 1985, April 2019, and April 2023. Each marks a pivotal time when Al-Burhan stood at the Western Gate of the General Command of the Sudanese Armed Forces in Khartoum.

• April 1985: Then-Lieutenant Al-Burhan aligned with popular demands for change against the regime of late President Jaafar Nimeiri amid economic crises and ongoing conflict in southern Sudan. On 6 April, he climbed atop a tank and moved toward the State Intelligence Service to signal the army’s alignment with the people. During this maneuver, a collision with an armed jeep belonging to the service caused serious injury, requiring urgent surgery with several dozen stitches. These events contributed to the army’s declaration, under General Abdel Rahman Swar al-Dahab, to side with the population and remove Nimeiri from power.

• April 2019: Al-Burhan, then a senior officer, again sided with popular demands for regime change, leading to the removal of President Omar al-Bashir and his subsequent appointment as head of the Transitional Military Council.

• April 2023: As Commander of the Armed Forces, he led the military response during the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) attempt to seize control of the state, defending Sudan’s sovereignty, resources, and key institutions.

Al-Burhan’s speeches and public appearances at the Western Gate and near the Victory Monument reflect these pivotal moments, emphasizing the continuity of his leadership from junior officer to head of state, consistently defending Sudan’s security, territorial integrity, and national wealth.
