Darfur and Kordofan states witnessed widespread popular protests organized by Native Administration leaders, civil society organizations, and youth, student, and women’s groups, protesting the announcement of the Sudanese Secondary Certificate results and the circumstances surrounding the results involving the children of political and military leaders.

The protests revealed that a number of leaders and ministers in the so-called Tasis (founding) Government had sent their children to sit for the official Sudanese Secondary Certificate examinations administered by the Sudanese government. Among them were the son of Education Minister in the Tasis Government, Mohamed Koko Jagdul; the son of Major General Hassan Mahjoub Al-Fadil; and the son of leading figure Al-Tahir Abu-Bakr Hajar, along with the children of a number of military leaders, officials, businesspeople, and rebel figures.

Citizens and protesting committees that arrived at the former headquarters of the South Darfur State government in Nyala said the examinations recently held in areas under rebel control were merely a media stunt unrelated to addressing the problems facing education. They said that sending the leaders’ children to sit for the official examinations amounted to an implicit recognition of Al-Burhan government and exposed what they described as the true exploitation of the marginalization issue.
