Social Welfare Minister Discusses Support for Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Services

Khartoum, (Nabaa Sudan) – Minister of Human Resources and Social Welfare Motasem Ahmed Saleh met on Thursday with a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), headed by Deputy Head of Mission Freya Radhi, with the participation of Sabine Gralla, Head of the ICRC Sub-Delegation in Khartoum, and Mohamed Fawzi Sahl, Physical Rehabilitation Programme Officer.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of the General Authority for Prosthetic Devices and Artificial Limbs.

The meeting discussed implementation of the cooperation agreement signed between the ministry and the ICRC, as well as priorities for developing prosthetics and assistive-device services. This includes providing raw materials and manufacturing inputs, training and capacity building for staff, and strengthening an integrated care and rehabilitation pathway for people injured in the war, from hospital treatment through to receiving a prosthetic limb or assistive device, thereby helping restore their mobility and enhance their independence.

The ICRC delegation affirmed its continued support for prosthetics and rehabilitation programmes within the limits of available resources. The two sides also discussed arrangements for holding an expanded community meeting at the end of this month, with the participation of relevant institutions and organizations, to mobilize support for beneficiaries’ urgent needs amid the continued increase in demand for rehabilitation and prosthetics services, particularly in the war-affected states of Darfur, Kordofan, and Blue Nile.

The meeting also addressed a number of humanitarian issues arising from the consequences of the war, as well as the ICRC’s role in matters concerning prisoners of war, detainees, and missing persons. Both sides stressed the importance of continued cooperation and coordination to help alleviate the suffering of those affected by the war, strengthen efforts to uphold human dignity, and provide support to those most in need.
