Khartoum, (Nabaa Sudan) – The Sudanese Journalists Network announced its withdrawal from the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate and decided not to have any presence or representation in the syndicate’s current offices, describing its participation in establishing the syndicate as a “grave strategic mistake.”

In a statement, the network said the syndicate was established on what it described as “fragile foundations contrary to trade union norms,” accusing it of moving away from journalists’ concerns and becoming part of a political alliance. It said this had stripped trade union work of its advocacy purpose and undermined the syndicate’s independence.

The network acknowledged that it had participated in establishing the syndicate with the aim of reforming its course from within, but said that assessment had been mistaken and that boycotting the process would have been preferable to participating in the establishment of what it described as a “fake entity” and a “trade union crime against journalists.”

It clarified that the withdrawal decision does not prevent its members from participating in the syndicate’s offices, provided they do not participate in the name of the network or as its representatives. It stressed that it would present its positions during the syndicate’s general assembly or any process aimed at amending and correcting its course.
