The Telecommunications and Postal Regulatory Authority issued a clarification regarding the temporary suspension of the mobile number portability (MNP) service, stressing its commitment to ensuring the continuity and quality of telecommunications services and responding to subscribers’ complaints, particularly those outside Sudan due to displacement.
The statement noted that the suspension is temporary until the necessary infrastructure for resuming the service is completed. The Authority highlighted that MNP was launched in late 2015 to allow mobile subscribers to switch operators while retaining their numbers, supporting competition and ensuring uninterrupted service quality.
The Authority added that the service functioned efficiently until April 15, 2023, but telecommunications systems unexpectedly stopped in February 2024, forcing companies to rely on alternative systems that could not provide the service at the required efficiency, limiting subscribers’ benefits.
Accordingly, the Authority has directed that ported numbers be returned to their original operators to ensure subscribers receive stable and uninterrupted telecommunications services. It confirmed that it is coordinating with operators to restore all halted systems, including the MNP service, in the near future.
