A United Nations Security Council Panel of Experts has disclosed that Colombian mercenaries were trained at Al-Ghiyathi and Al-Wathba military bases in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as well as at a training center at the Puntland Maritime Police Force base in Somalia, to fight alongside the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in Sudan, according to Sudan Tribune.
The report said the mercenaries arrived in Abu Dhabi or Bosaso in Puntland on commercial flights before being transferred on chartered flights to Benghazi or Kufra in Libya, in preparation for their deployment to Darfur to participate in fighting alongside the RSF militia.
The Panel of Experts said the mercenaries had been recruited since August 2024 by a Colombian company and hired by Global Security Services Group. It said the panel had reviewed evidence documenting their transfer from Colombia and deployment to Darfur through air transport, logistical arrangements and transit points in several countries.
The report said the Colombian mercenaries, known as the “Desert Wolves,” carried out various tasks for the RSF militia, including operating drones and artillery, engaging in ground combat, and driving armored personnel carriers near Nyala, El-Fasher and other locations.
It noted that the total number of Colombian mercenaries remains uncertain. The Sudanese government estimated their number at between 350 and 380, while other estimates put the figure at between 1,500 and 2,000, based on testimonies from former mercenaries.
