The United States Department of State has announced a suspension of processing immigrant visa applications for nationals of 75 countries, including Sudan.
The Department said the decision was taken due to high rates of reliance by some immigrants on social welfare programmes funded by U.S. taxpayers. It added that the freeze will remain in effect until assurances are in place that new immigrants will not constitute a financial burden on the American public.
