Khartoum (Nabaa Sudan) – Transitional Sovereignty Council Vice President (TSC) Malik Agar pledged to complete support for the Gezira and Managil Scheme and work to resolve irrigation problems and provide seeds and financing, enabling farmers to cultivate 400,000 feddans of wheat during the current winter season.
The pledge came during a meeting held on Thursday at Agar’s office with a delegation from the Council for Regulating Agricultural and Animal Production Professions at the Gezira and Managil Scheme.
Agar expressed his support for efforts to meet the requirements of the winter season and follow up on the scheme’s needs in coordination with the relevant authorities.
Agar affirmed his commitment to following up on irrigation problems, including the provision of fuel and payment of dues owed to companies operating in the scheme, as well as supplying the machinery needed to ensure the smooth operation of irrigation and the success of the agricultural season.
For his part, Alaa-Eddin Al-Bilawi, official spokesperson for the Council for Regulating Agricultural and Animal Production Professions at the Gezira and Managil Scheme, said the meeting discussed ways to address the challenges facing the scheme and accelerate preparations to meet the winter planting season.
Al-Bilawi explained that farmers were counting on cultivating 400,000 feddans of wheat under gravity-fed irrigation to help bridge the food deficit caused by low rainfall during the autumn season.
