New York — Prime Minister Kamil Idris met with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohamed at UN headquarters in New York on the sidelines of his visit to the organization.
During the meeting, Idris briefed Mohamed on Sudan’s government-led peace initiative, affirming that the country’s leadership and civilian government are fully committed to ending the conflict nationwide. He declared 2026 as the “Year of Peace in Sudan.”
The prime minister urged the United Nations and the Security Council to take concrete action to support and implement the initiative, which was presented to the Council the previous day. He reaffirmed the government’s readiness to facilitate humanitarian access, protect civilians, and cooperate with all efforts aimed at restoring peace.
Idris stressed that the UN and the Security Council bear a legal and moral responsibility to support Sudan’s peace initiative, warning that failure to do so would amount to a breach of the UN Charter and international humanitarian law.
For her part, Mohamed underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation between Sudan and the United Nations in the next phase, including enhancing partnerships to support peace and stability, facilitating humanitarian assistance, mobilizing international backing, and advancing political efforts. She also highlighted the role of African institutions—particularly IGAD and the African Union—in driving the peace process.
Idris praised the UN’s role and achievements in Sudan and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to removing all impediments facing UN agencies and staff in carrying out their work. He also expressed appreciation for the organization’s continued engagement.
Mohamed, in turn, reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to sustained coordination with the Sudanese government and support for peace and sustainable development efforts.
