The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it had recorded more than 11,000 active cases of missing persons in Sudan as of early 2026, including more than 9,000 cases registered since the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023, according to comments by ICRC spokesperson Farid Al-Hamid in an interview with Sudan Tribune.

Al-Hamid said the issue of missing and detained persons was among the top priorities of the committee’s work in cooperation with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society. He noted that the response includes searching for missing persons, restoring contact between family members, and supporting the safe and dignified management of human remains.

He explained that during the first half of 2026, the ICRC helped around 38,512 families restore or maintain contact through its free telephone call service. Its teams also succeeded in clarifying the fate and whereabouts of 613 missing persons among those registered with the organization.
