Flydubai said Flight 1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv was involved in an incident while airborne on Wednesday, while CNN, citing sources, reported that an altercation between the pilots led to an emergency signal being transmitted.
Israeli media reported that the aircraft, carrying around 150 people, briefly transmitted an emergency signal, raising concerns that it may have been hijacked and prompting Israel to scramble two fighter jets to escort it.
According to Ynet, the signal was transmitted as the aircraft was manually descending and turning back in the opposite direction before descending to a lower altitude.
Following the incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz held urgent security consultations, while Netanyahu’s office said that “the situation is under control” and that measures were underway to return the Israeli passengers safely.
