The Arab Council held an extensive workshop dedicated to discussing the developments of the Sudanese crisis and exploring pathways to resolve it. The session was chaired by the Council’s President and former Tunisian President, Dr. Moncef Al-Marzouki. The workshop brought together a number of Sudanese and Arab experts and stakeholders in politics, human rights, and media.
In his opening speech, Dr. Al-Marzouki emphasized Sudan’s special place in the Arab consciousness, stressing the centrality of the country’s unity and territorial integrity within the framework of Arab national security. He highlighted that the Council gives the Sudanese dossier high priority by organizing Sudanese–Sudanese meetings aimed at bridging differences and supporting an inclusive national process, while rejecting any projects for division or attempts to impose realities by force outside the will of the people.
Participants discussed the repercussions of the ongoing war since April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, including widespread violations affecting civilians in Darfur, El-Fashir, and other regions, as well as massive displacement and refugee waves considered among the largest globally, with millions of Sudanese in urgent need of humanitarian aid.
The interventions also addressed the impact of external interventions in prolonging the conflict, particularly regional support provided to the rebel militias, which participants described as a threat to Sudan’s unity and regional stability.
Speakers outlined a set of core principles for any resolution path, most notably:
• Upholding Sudan’s unity and sovereignty and rejecting division projects.
• Dismantling militias, restoring the state’s monopoly on arms, and rebuilding its institutions.
• Halting violations, protecting civilians, and implementing transitional justice and accountability.
• Activating international legal mechanisms and preparing professional documentation files.
• Launching a Sudanese–Arab media campaign to raise awareness of the crisis.
• Calling for a broad Arab relief initiative to address the humanitarian disaster.
• Emphasizing that the solution must be entirely Sudanese, free from external impositions.
The workshop concluded by stressing that the Sudanese crisis has exceeded its local dimension, representing part of broader challenges affecting regional stability. The participants affirmed that supporting the Sudanese people is both a moral and strategic responsibility and confirmed that the Arab Council will continue its political, human rights, and media efforts to support Sudan’s unity and achieve a just and lasting peace.
