IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu said that Sudan currently tops the world’s humanitarian emergency rankings, recording the highest number of people in need of humanitarian assistance worldwide—33.7 million people—and experiencing the world’s largest hunger and displacement crisis, all within three years of war.
Today, the phenomenon of “El Niño” is looming, threatening to exacerbate the crisis through further floods and droughts. Yet the war continues.
In my address to the high-level ministerial meeting on Sudan convened by France and its partners, I called on all international actors to put the Sudanese people at the center of all efforts, support de-escalation of the conflict, and unite behind a single, Sudanese-led peace process that is fully Sudanese-owned.
