Minawi Calls from Kampala for Upholding Sudan’s Unity, Says No Political Settlement Without Justice and Accountability

Darfur Region Governor and leader of Sudan Liberation Army Movement Minni Arko Minawi called on members of the Sudanese community in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, to uphold the unity of Sudan and prepare to return to the country to rebuild and reconstruct it. He stressed that justice must become the cornerstone of any future political settlement.

Minawi made the remarks during an informative meeting with members of the Sudanese community, attended by Sudan’s Ambassador to Uganda Ahmed Ibrahim Jarda and members of the diplomatic mission, as part of his ongoing official visit to Uganda.

Minawi opened the meeting by observing a minute of silence in honor of the souls of Sudan’s martyrs, followed by a comprehensive review of developments in the Sudanese crisis and its historical roots. He explained that the current situation is the result of years of accumulated political and developmental problems, coupled with the failure of successive governments to provide fundamental solutions.

The Darfur Region Governor also addressed the course of the December Revolution, noting that its national beginnings emerged in Damazin, Atbara and Khartoum. He said, however, that the sit-in witnessed foreign intervention that led to the hijacking of the revolution and the emergence of non-revolutionary elements at the forefront of the political scene following the fall of the previous regime.

Regarding the ongoing war in the country, Minawi described the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia as a symptom of Sudan’s crisis rather than its root cause, accusing them of committing violations against people in the marginalized regions and destroying the capital, Khartoum. He warned against attempts to impose a new demographic reality in Sudan, referring to the protracted siege of the historic city of El-Fasher and the situation at Zamzam Camp. He also accused the Rapid Support Forces militia of obstructing the delivery of humanitarian assistance and backing away from previously agreed commitments and understandings.

The Governor of Darfur Region called for an inclusive Sudanese dialogue leading to the establishment of a genuine federal system that grants the regions their full developmental and service rights, while retaining the sovereignty of the central government over foreign policy, defense and the Central Bank.

Minawi affirmed their commitment to the principle of justice and rejection of impunity for violations, stressing that the Jeddah Agreement explicitly stipulated the withdrawal of the RSF Militia from cities and vital facilities. He expressed confidence that the battle would be decided on the ground and affirmed their determination to continue until victory is achieved.
