New York, (Nabaa Sudan) – Governor of Darfur Region Minni Arko Minawi said that the proposed truce should not become a gateway to legitimizing the so-called “Tasis Government” or entrenching a parallel authority to the Sudanese Government.
Following talks with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, he explained that more than 8 million people from Darfur have been displaced outside the region, calling for the disarmament of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia and the removal of its forces and mercenaries from citizens’ homes, as well as allowing humanitarian aid to reach those in need and creating conditions for the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees.
Minawi affirmed his support for any genuine truce that serves civilians, but rejected turning it into political or military cover for any party, stressing Sudan’s unity and sovereignty.
