New York, (Nabaa Sudan) – Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and head of Sudan’s delegation to the conference, Dr. Ahmed Modawi Musa, met with Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Mr. Robert Floyd, on the sidelines of his participation in the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The minister commended the existing cooperation between Sudan and the organization in the field of earthquake monitoring. He briefed the Executive Secretary on developments in Sudan and the resumption of government operations from Khartoum, highlighting the scale of the systematic destruction that targeted state institutions, including the National Data Center of the Remote Sensing and Seismology Authority.
He called on the organization to dispatch a technical team to assess the damage and estimate the cost as a prelude to launching the reconstruction process. He also called on the organization to provide technical support to the authority by supplying monitoring equipment, upgradable software, data-link systems and power systems, as well as training courses for its personnel, enabling the center to resume its role in monitoring, recording and exchanging data.
Mr. Robert Floyd expressed his understanding of the current situation in Sudan and agreed with the minister on the need to dispatch a technical team to Sudan at the earliest opportunity, once circumstances permit. He affirmed the organization’s commitment to continuing cooperation with Sudan and providing the necessary support to enable the relevant institutions to resume their mandated roles.
He directed his aides responsible for the Sudan portfolio to coordinate on the matter with the mission in Vienna and the center in Sudan.
