Khartoum, (Nabaa Sudan) – Minister of Energy and Petroleum Eng. Al-Mua’tasim Ibrahim Ahmed discussed with Khartoum State Wali Ahmed Othman Hamza ways to improve electricity supply and rehabilitate and develop the sector’s infrastructure, amid increasing voluntary returns by citizens and the resumption of economic and service activities in the capital.
The minister affirmed that Khartoum is among the states most affected by the war, noting that the current phase is focused on reconstruction and rehabilitation of what was destroyed by the war, in preparation for moving toward comprehensive development, while strengthening coordination between the ministry and the state.
He reviewed the ministry’s plan to rehabilitate the electricity sector, which includes increasing hydropower and thermal generation, expanding renewable energy, repairing networks, substations, and transmission lines, and reconnecting power stations and major transformers.
The minister also highlighted efforts to rehabilitate hydropower and thermal generation and secure the electricity interconnection with Egypt, noting that the maintenance of Merowe Dam was carried out using Sudanese resources and personnel following the damage it sustained during the war.
He affirmed that efforts were underway to secure electricity needs for the coming period, particularly with the start of the winter agricultural season, while giving Khartoum priority in infrastructure rehabilitation and support for basic services.
For his part, the Khartoum State Wali commended the role of the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum in supporting the state, noting that it was among the first ministries to reopen its office in Khartoum and contributed to supplying electricity and fuel and restoring basic services. He also praised the sacrifices and efforts made by workers in the sector throughout the war.
The Wali stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to illuminate major roads, vital facilities, and streets in the capital, particularly roads leading to Khartoum Airport, in line with the return of citizens and the resumption of activities in the capital.
The two sides agreed to continue coordination and accelerate efforts to rehabilitate the electricity system and infrastructure in support of service stability and to strengthen the recovery, reconstruction, and development process.
