Moscow (Naba Sudan) – President of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, met on Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin Palace in Moscow, on the sidelines of his participation in the Third Russia–Africa Summit, which concluded its proceedings in Moscow.
The meeting addressed the course of bilateral relations between Sudan and Russia and ways to develop them across various political, economic and trade fields, with a view to building strategic partnerships.
General Al-Burhan congratulated President Putin on the two countries’ celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sudan and Russia. He also expressed his gratitude for the gracious invitation to participate in the summit and for the successful convening of its third edition.
TSC President affirmed his appreciation for Russia’s supportive positions towards Sudan in international forums, particularly at the United Nations Security Council. He noted that these positions had helped counter plans to interfere in Sudan’s internal affairs and undermine its sovereignty, most recently the expansion of Draft Resolution 1591 concerning the arms export ban to cover all of Sudan.
He also highlighted the enormous challenges facing Sudan as a result of the war of aggression imposed on the country by the terrorist rebel militia, which receives political and logistical support from regional and international powers.
During the meeting, the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council presented Russia with proposals for economic, trade and financial cooperation in the fields of energy, mining, agriculture, health, education and strategic planning. He stressed the need to work towards implementing these projects and signing the relevant documents at a time suitable for the Russian side.
Al-Burhan reiterated his aspiration to develop bilateral relations with Russia to the level of a strategic partnership. He also stated that Sudan was prepared to offer Russia investment sites for the extraction of gold, copper and other minerals.
For his part, President Putin thanked the TSC President Al-Burhan for his personal participation in the summit and for Sudan’s support for Russia in international forums, as well as its adoption of a neutral position regarding the crisis with Ukraine.
President Putin presented a roadmap for developing relations with Sudan across various fields, stressing the need to remove obstacles hindering stronger cooperation between the two countries.
Putin commended the notable growth in trade between the two countries in recent times and affirmed the readiness of Russian companies to establish partnerships in the fields of energy, agriculture, mining and education.
Russian President announced that Russia was prepared to provide support for stability in Sudan. He noted that the conflict had displaced nearly 13 million people over more than three years, adding that Russia supported ending the internal conflict, bringing the war to a halt and achieving lasting peace in Sudan.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides agreed on the importance of developing cooperation between their countries in a manner that serves the interests of their two friendly peoples.
It is worth mentioning that the meeting was attended, on the Sudanese side, by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ambassador Mohi-El-Din Salem; Minister of Finance Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim; Director of the General Intelligence Service General Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal; Director of the Defence Industries System General Mirghani Idris; Sudan’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Mohamed Al-Ghazali Al-Tijani Siraj; and Director of the TSC President’s Office, Major General Dr. Tareq Saud.
