Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Workneh Gebeyehu said Sudan’s future “belongs solely to the Sudanese people,” noting that the international community will contribute to determining the extent to which Sudanese people are given the opportunity to shape their future in the context of peace.
Addressing the UN Security Council meeting on Sudan, Gebeyehu called for unified and coordinated diplomacy, unhindered humanitarian access, and support for an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process that preserves Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
He said the war in Sudan “has gone on for far too long,” stressing the urgent need to bring it to an end and affirming IGAD’s readiness to work with all partners to advance peace, stability, and recovery.
