Prime Minister Calls for Stronger AU Support as Sudan Advances Toward Peace

Prime Minister Dr. Kamil Idris met in Khartoum on Sunday with a delegation of African Union ambassadors and members of the African Peace and Security Council, headed by Algeria’s Ambassador and Council Chairperson for August, Ambassador Mohamed Khalid.

The meeting was attended by ministers and members of the Hope Government, along with representatives of political and civil forces.

Idris briefed the delegation on developments in Sudan and the destruction caused by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia and its supporters, stressing that the AU delegation’s visit sends a strong message of continued African engagement with Sudan.

He emphasized that such engagement must be based on mutual respect among AU member states, noting Sudan’s historic role as a founding member of the Union and its contribution to African unity and solidarity.

The Prime Minister recalled Sudan’s hosting of African liberation movements, including Nelson Mandela, during the early stages of the continent’s liberation struggle.

He said the delegation would witness firsthand the scale of destruction and violations affecting infrastructure, public facilities, and state institutions.

Idris also outlined the government’s peace initiative presented to the UN Security Council in December 2025, which calls for the RSF’s withdrawal from areas under its control and the implementation of disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration measures as a pathway to ending the war.
He called for greater AU support for Sudan, including backing efforts to classify the militia as a terrorist organization in light of its conduct.

The Prime Minister stressed Sudan’s red lines, including rejection of any equivalence between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF militia, as well as any external interference in the country’s affairs. He affirmed that Sudanese people alone should determine the future of their country.

Idris said the Armed Forces are advancing in Greater Kordofan and will move toward Greater Darfur, adding that the Sudanese crisis requires stronger African solidarity because its repercussions could extend beyond Sudan.
He announced that an inclusive Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue would begin soon, leading to national recovery, reconciliation, constitutional reconstruction, and ultimately free and fair elections.
