The Director General and Acting Minister of Health of Red Sea State, Dr. Ahlam Abdelrasoul, praised Italian organizations for their continued support to Sudan's health sector through humanitarian projects focused on rehabilitating health facilities and training medical personnel.
She made the remarks during a meeting in Port Sudan with Italy's Ambassador to Sudan, Michele Tommasi, Deputy Ambassador Simone Corselli, and a delegation from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), including officials from its Rome headquarters and Sudan office. The delegation is visiting Sudan to assess health sector needs and emergency response priorities. The meeting was attended by senior state health officials.
Dr. Ahlam said the visit reflects the strong and enduring partnership between Sudan and Italy, noting that Italian organizations have maintained their support for the health sector throughout the conflict, particularly in humanitarian assistance and the rehabilitation of health infrastructure. She also commended Italy's humanitarian commitment as a reflection of the longstanding ties between the two countries.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation to address current health challenges. The two sides reviewed priorities for reinforcing the state's health system, tackling epidemic risks, and advancing plans for a modern medical city, a specialized referral medical complex, and additional specialized hospitals.
Ambassador Tommasi and AICS Director Michele Morana reaffirmed Italy's commitment to continuing its support and cooperation with Sudan's health sector.
The delegation is scheduled to visit several AICS-funded projects, including Port Sudan Teaching Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The visit also included the inauguration of Al-Amal School for the Deaf in Port Sudan, financed by the Italian Government as part of humanitarian education projects implemented in partnership with the Ministries of Health, Education, and Social Development.
