Sennar, (Nabaa Sudan) – UNICEF Representative in Sudan Sheldon Yett said at least 30 children were killed or injured after several shells struck the city of Sennar earlier this week.
In a statement, Yett said the attacks continued to inflict significant harm and suffering on children, in addition to widespread damage and destruction to essential infrastructure on which they depend. He called for an end to violence against children and attacks targeting infrastructure.
According to UN News, he said explosive weapons were responsible last year for more than half of the child deaths and injuries documented by the United Nations in Sudan.
The UNICEF representative renewed his call for all parties to comply with international humanitarian law and take all possible precautions to protect children, noting that Sudan witnessed in 2023 the highest number of verified grave violations against children in more than a decade.
He added that 72 percent of verified violations involved the killing and maiming of children, followed by the recruitment and use of children by armed groups and sexual violence. He noted that the United Nations continued to receive reports of children being killed and injured by airstrikes and the use of artillery and small arms.
He said girls had borne a particularly heavy burden, facing risks including rape and other forms of sexual violence.
